Rajapyykit / Landmark: Linen on the border zone 2005 /2022, Installation
Recycled and inherited textiles, photo transfer and embroidery.
Textile installation based on the stories and the memory of my grandparents life as a newly wed couple and evacuee from Carelia. Old letters, photographs and clothes tell the story of women at the home front trying to keep things together while worrying about their husbands on the front.
Linen on the border zone is formed by the story of my grandmother putting up the linens to dry on the yard when soldiers came to tell her that she is the only civil left on the island and all the others have already evacued. The enemy was already on the other side of the island. She had to leave the linens, grab two little child with her and hurry on the boat and over the sea from Vyborg island Uuras to Virolahti.
Pyykki means in Finnish; laundry, landmark and also an argue.
Made to Finnish -Carelian exhibition Dialog to Petroskoi and Salo artmuseums.
