I mainly embroider by hand and work with recycled material. The slowliness gives time to think and focus. Stitches connect separate parts togerher. The working process itself is a ritual: used and broken change shape and born into another creatures. I combine painting, ink and different phototransfer and textiledye methods on my works.

”Willpower alone can overcome a physical problem” used to describe a situation in which someone is able to control a physical condition, problem, etc., by using the mind to keep going even when we are tired. Sometimes the willpower is not enough or it is too much for our body. When stress remains in the body, the physiological reactions do not subside, but constantly send messages to our brains to prepare for the threat, even if the actual danger no longer exists. This can cause, for example, panic attacks and feelings of anxiety.

In the Mindmaps series, I have painted with ink copies of old lithographs depicting old cities. The textiles are then cut into pieces, revealing part of the picture below, some of the works also feature ink-painted momikami tissue paper and writing. Hand embroidered paths can be interpreted as concrete paths or mind wonderind around. The past and the present are bound together into one inseparable whole.

Keskeisiä teemoja teoksissa ovat ajan jäljet ja muodonmuutokset sekä materiaalin rakenne ja kosketeltavuus. Tahrat ja lian voi tässä tapauksessa kokea sekä konkreettisina että symbolisina; niin esine kuin ihminenkin voi olla ruosteessa, elämä tahraa ja jättää jälkensä.

Teokset on värjätty ruosteella, hiilellä, punaviiinillä, kahvilla ja teellä. Käsinkirjonta nostaa esille tahroista syntyviä muotoja. Osaan teoksista on vedostettu grafiikkaa, jota on jatkettu kirjonnalla. Kokoan näistä jäljistä karttoja arkielämästä.  Osa kirjailluista pisteistä, viivoista ja kuvioista muistuttaakin karttamerkkejä. Pyöreisiin kirjontakehyksiin pingotettujen töiden rantaviivamaiset läntit ja suoraan kankaan päälle kirjailtujen teosten samankeskiset vyöhykkeet assosioituvat topografisiin korkeuskäyriin, maanpinnan muotojen kuvauksiin.

The main themes in the works are traces of time and deformations, as well as the structure and tactility of the material. Stains and dirt can be experienced in this case as both concrete and symbolic; both an object and a person can be rusty; life stains and leaves its mark. These marks can be seen as maps of everyday life. Works are stained with rust, charcoal, red wine, coffee and tea. Hand embroidery highlights the shapes created by stains. Stains traditionally perceived as dirt and flaws are now emerging as interesting maps and signs. Some of the works have been combined with graphics and been worked forward with embroidery.

NUKU, NUKU NURMILINTU 2012

Nuku nuku nurmilintu -näyttely käsittelee (perhe)väkivallan kokemista sekä hoitamista ja parantamista, ajan pysähtymistä.

Kääre suojaa ja peittää, kätkee sisälleen salaisuuden. Se tukee ja antaa voimaa. Kääre voi olla myös hallitseva, tukahduttava. Käärimisen ja purkamisen rituaali on myös mielenkiintoinen; ytimen ympärille kertyy kerroksittain materiaalia joka antaa viitteitä muodosta, mutta peittää yksityiskohdat. Tekstiiliveistokset muodostuvat useista kerroksista ja työprosessissa vaihtelevat kirjonnan ja värjäyksen syklit. Työskentelyprosessi itsessään on rituaalinen, käytetyt esineet, rikkinäiset lelut, muuttavat muotoaan ja syntyvät joksikin toiseksi olioksi. Teoksista otetut röntgenkuvat paljastavat rakenteen ja piilotetut salaisuudet.

Nuku nuku nurmilintu (Sleep sleep grassland bird) -exhibition deals with experiencing of (domestic)violence, as well as the management and improvement . The cloth protects and covers, conceals a secret. It supports and gives strength . The wrapper can also be dominant, suffocating. Wrapping and unloading ritual is also interesting; accumulating in layers around the core material gives an indication of the form, but conceal the details.

These textile sculptures consist of several layers, and the work builds up from embroidering and dyeing cycles. The working process itself is like a ritual: used objects , broken toys, change shape and are born into another creatures. X-ray images of the works reveal their structure and hidden secrets .
